A Simple, Weekly Bible Study Routine & Lesson Plan for Busy Moms Homeschooling their Kids
If you’re a homeschooling mom trying to fit in a meaningful Bible study routine that’s manageable and engaging for your kids, you’re not alone! Many of us want to help our children grow spiritually without adding stress or complexity to our already busy schedules.
My good friend Kelsey-- a public school teacher turned home school teacher recently shared her simple, structured weekly Bible study plan using Fountain Bible's Bible Book Summaries—and with her permission I want to share how it’s been a game-changer for her homeschool routine!
Here’s the Monday-to-Friday breakdown that’s working wonders for her and might be just what you’re looking for:
Monday – Start with the Basics- Context & What/Who is it?
Each Monday, they begin by introducing a new Bible book. The Bible Book Summaries page is printed and placed in a binder, so each book gets its own dedicated page.
They look at the name of the book and where it fits in the Bible in the "context" section for background information and a brief overview of the book
Then they read the book summary in the "what is it/ who is it" section. This approach helps her daughter understand how each book connects to the bigger story of the Bible, building a foundational understanding.
Why This Works: Organizing everything in a binder allows for easy reference and gives a sense of accomplishment. This way, they can look back anytime and review previous lessons, which is especially helpful as kids start to see the Bible as one connected story.
Tuesday – Copywork & Key Verses
On Tuesdays, her daughter focuses on copywork by writing down the book’s key verses from the summary. She mentioned the verses are a bit small, but she actually loved this as it made it perfect to encourage her daughter to dive into her Bible-- practicing how to find verses.
This also doubles as handwriting practice, often with cursive, and is an opportunity to reflect on what each verse means. They go over the verses together, discussing any questions and talking about the messages they convey. Some books are easy (like Genesis), while others, like Leviticus, require more focus. She loved using the Bible Study Sheets included as a free Bonus with the summaries.
Why This Works: Copywork reinforces memory and comprehension, allowing her daughter to meditate on Scripture while developing writing skills. It’s a gentle approach to memorization that doesn’t feel like a chore.
Wednesday – Story Exploration & Narration -Trials Discussed Section
Wednesdays are all about diving into the stories in the "Trials Discussed" Section. Using the Bible Book Summary as a guide, her daughter picks a few stories mentioned on the page and reads them directly from the Bible. Afterward, she narrates what she read back to her mom. If a book has several stories, they break it down to avoid overwhelm.
Why This Works: Narration is a powerful tool for comprehension. When kids retell a story in their own words, it helps them process and internalize the message. This approach makes it easier for them to recall the story later, while encouraging critical thinking.
Thursday – Learning Key Themes
On Thursdays, they explore the major themes and lessons in the book. Her daughter tries to explain these key points and, if she can, expands on what each theme means or how it applies to her life. They discuss questions like, “What does this story teach us about God?” or “How can we apply this lesson today?”
Why This Works: Discussing themes helps her daughter understand the purpose behind each Bible book. It’s not just about reading stories; it’s about learning life lessons and growing in faith. This step makes the Bible come alive and feel relevant to her daily life.
Friday – Weekly Review
Fridays are review days. Her daughter goes over everything she’s learned that week, summarizing the main points and verses she remembers. This is their chance to pull all the lessons together and solidify what she’s taken away from the week’s study.
Why This Works: Regular review reinforces learning, making it more likely that she’ll retain the lessons. The weekly wrap-up also gives her a sense of completion and accomplishment, helping her stay motivated.
Why This Routine Is So Effective-- From a busy mom's perspective
Using Fountain Bible's Book Summaries provides a structured, easy-to-use format that simplifies planning making it easy to stay on track. Kelsey says she "loves that she can print as many copies as she needs for each book, keeping everything organized and accessible. The summaries cover the main points of each book in a single, easy to digest page for me and my daughter, making Bible study fun & straightforward, without being overwhelming for us.
